Garth Tander will go down as one of the greats.
A six-time Repco Bathurst 1000 winner, a V8 Supercar champion and victor of the Bathurst 24 Hour race, Tander has been a leading driver at the top level for 25 years after retiring somewhat prematurely from full-time competition in 2018.
Holding a long relationship with Garry Rogers Motorsport across two stints, Tander received his opportunity halfway through the 1998 season when Steve Richards departed to become Nissan’s test driver in the UK.
At the time, Tander was the reigning Australian Formula Ford Championship winner and had no budget to make the next step in his career. Enter Garry Rogers.
Tander went on to nearly win the title in 2000 for GRM and once he left for the 2005 season to join the HSV Dealer Team, a title came two years later to mark a successful debut for the VE Commodore.
Joining the Holden Racing Team in 2008 led to a near-decade relationship with Walkinshaw Racing during an up and down period for the former dominant squad of Australian Touring Car Championship competition.
A return to GRM bookended Tander’s career for two seasons helping James Golding develop as a driver along the way.
Picked up by the crack Triple Eight Race Engineering to partner Shane van Gisbergen, Tander won a further two Bathurst 1000s before making a shock switch to Penrite Racing for 2023.
Helping drive the rise of Penrite Racing during the Gen3 era, Tander has had a hand in developing Matt Payne and Kai Allen. Another Bathurst win came in 2025 with young New Zealander Payne in one of the most thrilling races in years.
Tander will enter a broadcast role in retirement partnered with the position of team and driver advisor at Penrite Racing.
