The last blast around Pukekohe – A preview of the Auckland SuperSprint

As the Repco Supercars Championship prepares for its final round to be held at Pukekohe Park Raceway ahead of its closure next year, it is a case of catch me if you can for Shane van Gisbergen.

The local hero holds a 500-point lead in the title back to Monster Energy Racing’s Cameron Waters after another clinical display at Sandown where he secured two race victories, the other achieved by Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Will Davison.

Sitting third in the standings, Davison is just 19-points behind Waters and holds a margin of three back to Anton De Pasquale.

After a fast start to his title campaign and the final one in a General Motors product for the foreseeable future, Chaz Mostert rounds out the top five, but is more than 200-points in arrears of De Pasquale.

Yes, he may be the best team and car, but these are just easy cop outs to describe Red Bull Ampol Racing Team rookie Broc Feeney’s season so far further proving it was the right decision to bring him onboard alongside van Gisbergen.

At Pukekohe, all the Repco Supercars drivers will be battling for the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, which was first awarded in 2013. Bidding to be a three-time winner, van Gisbergen is in the box seat given his recent form at both Pukekohe and the championship.

Just like last round at Sandown, the Repco Supercars Championship field is at 25 entries and the schedule consists of three sessions of qualifying and racing across the weekend.

Before those sessions there is a sole Friday practice session and one during Saturday morning before the action starts.
