GTI – Volkswagen’s

iconic hot hatch

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf GTI’s launch and what continues to be a revolution.
Volkswagen started the hot hatch phenomenon and is remains one of the leaders in this field especially since the launch of the fifth generation Golf GTI in 2004.
But the beginning of the GTI was back in 1974 when six staff members within Volkswagen concocted a secret plan to produce a sporty version of its small Golf hatchback.
It was an unofficial project encouraged by Board Member for Technology Hermann Hablitzel and prototypes produced included a 73kW carbureted version.
By early-March 1975, the concept was officially presented by Toni Schmucker, the Chairman of the Board of Management, who gave it the green light to be produced.
Becoming development order EA195, the Golf Sport as it was known has its world premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt six months later, then it received a larger 80kW engine.
However, through this planning process the name of what was the Golf Sport, but the search was on for a new designation and it didn’t take long for GTI to be chosen.
The GTI’s popularity was almost immediate after being a smash hit at the International Motor Show and upon its launch in Germany, it was so popular Volkswagen’s initial 5000 units sold out immediately.
Bought for just 13,850 German marks, the GTI offered something completely different not available in the marketplace. An accessible performance model.
The original GTI had a top speed of 182km/h, black wheel arch extensions, black frame around the rear window, red edge around the grill, tartan sports seats, golf ball gear knob and a bespoke steering wheel.
Amazingly, 5000 units eventually turned into 461,690 highlighted by the special edition Pirelli-GTI.
Now up to its eighth generation, the GTI is as popular as ever and it Volkswagen has guaranteed it will continue with internal combustion engines for some time to come.
