The final curtain has been closed on the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship season as the award winners were crowned at last night’s Gala.
The Gala was held at the Adelaide Oval where Shane van Gisbergen was formally presented with the Repco Supercars Championship trophy.
Retiring Penrite Racing driver Lee Holdsworth won the biggest off-track award, the Barry Sheene Medal as the ‘best and fairest’ in the field as voted by the media.
His replacement, Matt Payne won the other media-voted award, the Mike Kable Young Gun.
The very much revered Drivers’ Driver Award was received by Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters, his second after winning it in 2020. Waters also won the Supercars Poll Award.
In addition to being awarded the championship trophy, van Gisbergen also took victory in the Fans’ Choice Most Popular Driver Award.
Van Gisbergen’s team Red Bull Ampol Racing won the Best Presented Team fan voted award and the Valo Adelaide 500 did likewise for the Best Event.
Inducted into the Supercars Hall of Fame was seven-time Bathurst winner and multiple champion winner Craig Lowndes as he was joined by long-time race director Tim Schenken, who retired last year from the role.
Schenken’s time as race director followed an international driving career including a stint in Formula 1.
Fittingly, Holden secured the Champion Manufacturer of the Year in its last season of Supercars competition.
Popular commentator Chad Neylon won the Media Award.
