Brad Jones Racing’s Andre Heimgartner led the way in both morning and afternoon sessions at Sydney Motorsport Park driving the R&J Batteries Chevrolet Camaro.
In the first Supercars pre-season test for Gen3, the New Zealander set a 1m 29.678, going 0.148s faster than he did in the morning as damp conditions greeted the Repco Supercars Championship teams at Sydney Motorsport Park, but the track dried during the day.
Following Heimgartner in each session was Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus driver Will Brown in his Camaro finishing the day 0.015s by the end of the afternoon.
Third in the morning session was Brad Jones Racing driver Jack Smith in his SCT-backed Camaro leading Will Davison for Shell V-Power Racing Team Ford and David Reynolds in his Penrite Racing Mustang completed the top five.
Mark Winterbottom, Scott Pye, rookie Matt Payne, Macauley Jones and Brodie Kostecki finished inside the top 10.
In their first drive of Walkinshaw Andretti United Built Mustangs, Nick Percat was 17th and Chaz Mostert in 22nd.
Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen finished the morning session 23rd in the Red Bull Ampol Racing Team Chevrolet Camaro, while teammate Broc Feeney was 12th.
Van Gisbergen’s chief rival for last year’s Repco Supercars Championship Cameron Waters placed his Monster Energy Racing Mustang in 21st.
The real gauge of how fast Gen3 will be was the afternoon as Heimgartner led Erebus duo Brown and Kostecki, with Macauley Jones’ Pizza Hut Camaro fourth and teammate Smith rounding out the top five.
The fastest eight drivers were in the Chevrolet with Middy’s Racing driver Bryce Fullwood sixth from van Gisbergen and Winterbottom.
Blanchard Racing Team enjoyed a good first run with Todd Hazelwood into ninth as he was the sole Mustang in the top 10, with Feeney behind.
Rookie Cameron Hill proved quick in 11th driving the Truck Assist Racing Chevrolet Camaro, as Mostert and Anton De Pasquale led the Ford charge back in 13th and 14th, respectively.
Waters in 16th led Reynolds and Davison as the first all-in test day ended.
Some niggling problems were encountered such as Jones and Pye with separate gearbox gremlins, while Percat caused two red flags due to a loose wheel.
Newcastle is next for the Repco Supercars Championship on March 10-12.
