Shane van Gisbergen on pole after tightly contested qualifying in Perth

Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen has taken pole position for the opening race of the third event on the Repco Supercars Championship calendar in Perth.

Setting his time early in the final segment of qualifying, none of his rivals were able to eclipse van Gisbergen’s 54.362s benchmark in the closing stages.

Championship leader Brodie Kostecki will start on the front row in his Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus after falling short by just 0.025s of van Gisbergen.

David Reynolds in the lead Penrite Racing Ford Mustang was third and will start alongside Jack Le Brocq as he continues his impressive beginning to the season for Truck Assist Racing.

Rookie Matt Payne made it two Penrite Racing Mustangs in the top five from the experienced James Courtney for Snowy River Racing. Will Davison was the sole Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang inside the top 10 and will start seventh alongside Castrol Racing driver Thomas Randle.

Nulon Racing was represented inside the top 10 by Tim Slade, who will start ninth alongside the lead Brad Jones Racing entry of Bryce Fullwood for Middy’s.

Van Gisbergen’s teammate Broc Feeney was 11th as many contenders faltered including Walkinshaw Andretti United pair Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat, Anton De Pasquale, Cameron Waters, Andre Heimgartner, Will Brown and James Golding.

This afternoon’s 42-lap opener begins at 3:45pm AWST or 5:45pm AEST.
