Penrite Racing lead the way in final systems check

Penrite Racing’s two Ford Mustangs led the way in the warm up session prior to this afternoon’s Sandown 500.

Conditions are heating up ahead of the main event at 2:15pm AEST, with the warm up providing an opportunity for co-drivers to gain extra mileage and pit crews to complete vital last minute practice.

David Reynolds set a time of 1m 09.133s to top the warm up in the Penrite Racing Ford Mustang he’ll share with Garth Tander, while Matt Payne backed this up in second trailing by 0.211s in the second team entry to be driven with Kevin Estre.

Qualifying 16th yesterday, Chaz Mostert was third as he reunites with his Bathurst 1000 winning co-driver Lee Holdsworth in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang.

Repco Supercars Championship rookie Cam Hill will be partnered by Jaylyn Robotham and was placed fourth for Truck Assist Racing in the lead Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, with Scott Pye fifth in the Team 18 entry set to feature Warren Luff also.

Anton De Pasquale was sixth in the lead Shell V-Power Racing Team Ford Mustang GT to be shared alongside Tony D’Alberto, the Jack Le Brocq/Jayden Ojeda Truck Assist Racing Camaro was seventh ahead of championship leader Brodie Kostecki, who will be partnered by David Russell in the Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus Chevrolet.

The Cam Waters/James Moffat Monster Energy Racing Mustang and James Courtney/Zak Best Snowy River Racing Ford rounded out the top 10.

No problems were encountered during the warm up building up to the return of the Sandown 500, the first since 2019.

The race is set to get underway at 2:15pm AEST.
