A superb performance for Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney has given him pole position for the Race 17 at Symmons Plains, but teammate and championship leader Will Brown is buried in the pack.
The three-part knockout qualifying format eliminated heavy hitters early headlined by Will Davison in the Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang after a set-up change to the brakes hurt his performance. Jack Le Brocq was also out early and will start 22nd for Erebus Motorsport and another surprise was Matt Payne in 23rd for Penrite Racing.
Brown’s qualifying came unstuck due to a red flag in the middle session after Thomas Randle spun the Monster Castrol Racing Mustang during the closing stages on the front straight. There was only minor damage and Randle will start 16th alongside Brown.
Andre Heimgartner, Mark Winterbottom and David Reynolds all missed a top 10 berth.
Feeney’s final flying lap was enough on a 50.988s to edge Cam Waters by 0.082s from reigning champion Brodie Kostecki and Nick Percat.
Chaz Mostert will line up fifth alongside Cameron Hill as Ryan Wood and Anton De Pasquale make up row four.
Completing the top 10 are PremiAir Nulon Racing teammates Tim Slade and James Golding.
Race 17 of the Repco Supercars Championship at Symmons Plains will commence at 4:10pm AEST.
