Two major incidents marred qualifying for the Repco Bathurst 1000 as New Zealander Matt Payne will be last out for tomorrow’s Top 10 Shootout after scoring provisional pole.
Payne’s last gasp lap of 2m 05.645s pipped Monster Castrol Racing’s Cameron Waters by a bare 0.006s, with the top four split by 0.019s.
Filling out the top three was Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney, with reigning champion Brodie Kostecki putting the Erebus Motorsport Camaro into fourth.
Current Repco Supercars Championship leader Will Brown was sixth ahead of chief rival Chaz Mostert in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang.
Andre Heimgartner leapt into the top 10 in the closing stages driving the R&J Batteries Racing Camaro ahead of Kostecki’s teammate Jack Le Brocq, Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Anton De Pasquale and Richie Stanaway for Penrite Racing.
Two experienced drivers were caught up in incidents at the top of the mountain, with David Reynolds in the TRADIE Beer Racing Chevrolet Camaro hitting the kerb wrong at The Esses sending him into the fence on exit.
The red flag came out, but the session restarted when at the conclusion Will Davison ran wide exiting The Dipper to hit the dust put down to cover the liquids expelled by Reynolds’ Camaro and careered into the fence on the outside.
It will be a large job to repair both entries ahead of action tomorrow.
Two practice sessions including one for co-drivers only before the Top 10 Shootout at 5:05pm AEDT.
