The Repco Supercars Championship won’t be the only loud engines travelling around Taupo as the Super V8s will hit the track for the first time as a support category.
As the New Zealanders do, an eclectic mix of V8s will share the stage with the Supercars at Taupo combining the likes of NZ V8 Touring Cars, TA2, Tranzam and V8 Utes as well.
It makes up a high-quality support cast also including the Toyota 86s and Central Muscle Cars.
An entry for the Super V8s will be the familiar Angus Fogg Mustang, which will complete double duty in the Central Muscle Cars as well believe it or not.
Both categories allow different levels of modification and Fogg’s team will switch between the two across the weekend making for a busy event for the team.
Super V8s allow the modifications Fogg ran last year in select National Sports Sedan Series events sporting a big rear wing and improved aerodynamics, while these will be removed for the Central Muscle Cars.
“I’m not 100 percent sure, but it seemed like a good idea at the time,” he laughed.
“I enjoy driving the car in its hot-rodded form. We’re there anyway, the opportunity had arisen to run the two categories, and I think we can do it given the space in between the races.
“There’s only one that’s back-to-back, which we’ll have to choose which one we’re going to do, but the rest we can put the other bits on or off and go and do some more laps at a cool meeting.
“It’s more exposure for my sponsors. It’s the last meeting of the season really for me, so I want to go out in a blaze of glory, or maybe a blaze of madness.”
Fogg believes he will be more than competitive in each category and has hinted the Mustang will receive some care and attention during New Zealand’s off-season.
“It’s been quite a versatile car, racing all sorts of classes and all sorts of tracks. It’s been a really good car. So yep, we’ll give it a good hiding again at Taupo and then maybe it’s time for a birthday for the old girl.
“She’s done seven or eight seasons now. It still presents well, but it’s getting a bit raggedy underneath, so it would be nice to.”
The next round of the Repco Supercars Championship is at Taupo on April 11-13.
