The Repco Supercars Championship will race as a support to the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix for another three-years.
Supercars and the Australian Touring Car Championship have been a fixture of Formula 1’s regular trip down under since the first in 1985 held in Adelaide.
Even when the Grand Prix moved to Melbourne, the touring cars featuring greats such as Larry Perkins, Peter Brock, Dick Johnson and Alan Jones raced at Albert Park.
A part from 2007, the Supercars have competed alongside Formula 1 ever since and last year fans were able to get closer through the repositioning of the championship’s paddock alongside Porsche Carrera Cup Australia in the Motorsport Straight Precinct.
In 2018, points were awarded towards the Repco Supercars Championship for the first time and the Larry Perkins Trophy was inaugurated.
Supercars CEO James Warburton revealed the new deal in a press conference this morning.
“We are extremely proud to be extending our partnership with the Australian Grand Prix and thank Minister Dimopoulos and Travis (Auld) for their continued support,” said Warburton.
“This event is a special part of our Championship. It showcases the unique, combative style ofSupercars racing to the world and the huge new fanbase being drawn by Formula 1. Our drivers and teams love it and we know their F1 counterparts feel the same way.”
“We’re looking forward to showing off the magic of Supercars again this weekend.”
Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Travis Auld welcomed the extension.
“Supercars are one of the most revered categories in the motorsport world, with drivers from all over the world eager to get behind the wheel as seen in recent years with F1 stars jumping at the opportunity when they come to Melbourne.”
“It’s incredibly exciting to have the Supercars Championship join us for another three years, we know they are a fan favourite and add a huge amount of uniquely Australian entertainment to the four days at Albert Park.”
The Repco Supercars Championship will contest four races across The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
