Porsche’s Allan Moffat retro livery

Penske’s Porsche factory IMSA team has sported a retro livery thanks to a tie-up with Apple featuring its distinctive rainbow colours from 40-years ago.

The pair of Porsche 963s featured a tribute livery honouring Dick Barbour Racing’s entry into the 1980 IMSA GT season in a 935 K3 driven by Bob Garretson.

It was Garretson’s connection with Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who were both Porsche enthusiasts that led to the sponsorship of the privateer 935 K3.

The link to Moffat is he joined Dick Barbour Racing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1980 when the 935 K3 was in Apple colours, although it ended in a DNF.

Moffat and Porsche’s Australian distributor Alan Hamilton had done a deal to contest the Australian Sports Car Championship due to Ford not supporting the homologation of the XD Falcon, the Canadian was a free agent.

At Le Mans, the Apple 935 K3 ran as high as fourth before its retirement as Moffat shared the driving duties with Garretson and future IndyCar champion Bobby Rahal.

The pair of Penske Porsches finished the IMSA race at Laguna Seca in sixth and seventh.
