Holden might not be around as a manufacturer anymore, but its history remains and 500 wins in the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars is quite the achievement.
This landmark was complete at the Tasmania SuperSprint a decade ago when Shane van Gisbergen greeted the chequered flag in the opening race of the weekend.
Holden’s first win in the ATCC came nine years after the title was inaugurated and courtesy of racing great Norm Beechey at the long gone Surfers Paradise International Raceway driving a Monaro GTS 327.
From there, Beechey was the first driver to win the ATCC in a locally assembled model and marked the maiden title for Holden.
From then until the Holden’s final season of competition in 2022, another 22 championships were won including three for van Gisbergen.
Back in 2016, van Gisbergen was in his first season at Triple Eight Race Engineering following a stint at underdog team Tekno Autosports.
It proved a dream maiden season for the partnership as the New Zealander took the his maiden Supercars Championship by 200-points from his teammate Jamie Whincup.
This all started in Tasmania as the victory marked the first for van Gisbergen at Triple Eight Race Engineering, which kicked off a dominant partnership.
