Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen finishes opening day in Darwin on top

Red Bull Ampol Racing Team’s Shane van Gisbergen heads into tomorrow’s qualifying session on top of the timesheets after the completion of the second practice session at Hidden Valley.

The Repco Supercars Championship leader set a 1m 05.420s to pip fellow Kiwi Andre Heimgartner by 0.044s in the R&J Batteries Brad Jones Racing Holden ZB Commodore and title rival Anton De Pasquale in the lead Dick Johnson Racing Ford Mustang by 0.088s.

DJR teammate Will Davison was right behind in fourth as Mark Winterbottom repeated his good form from last year’s visit to place fifth in the IRWIN Racing ZB Commodore after being held up on his fast lap.

On top of the timesheets in opening practice Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert ZB Commodore was sixth ahead of rookie Broc Feeney, Monster Energy Racing’s Cameron Waters, David Reynolds in the Penrite Racing Mustang and the Boost Mobile entry of Brodie Kostecki rounded out the top 10 after being hampered on his fast lap.

Following a frontrunning performance in opening practice, James Courtney was 24th after an incident at Turn 10 resulted in severe damage being inflicted to the Snowy River Racing Tickford Racing Ford Mustang, but it will be repaired for tomorrow’s action.

Joining Courtney down towards the rear of the field, Blanchard Racing Team’s Tim Slade continued to be off the pace, while Thomas Randle was also down in 26th.

Others outside the top 10 included the second Boost Mobile Racing ZB Commodore of Will Brown in 18th, Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Nick Percat a position behind and Nulon Racing driver Scott Pye in 22nd.

Lead Wildcard continued to be Jayden Ojeda in the third Walkinshaw Andretti United entry being 20th.

The Repco Supercars Championship returns to the Hidden Valley at 11:45am ASCT for Race 16 Qualifying.
