Red Bull Ampol Racing’s winning drought has ended after Broc Feeney took his first win since Tasmania in the Repco Supercars Championship Race 24 in Perth.
Feeney took advantage of an awkward moment for previous race winner Matt Payne to take a relieving win for Red Bull Ampol Racing.
In what was the worst form slump in the team’s history, Feeney broke a seven race podium-less streak after qualifying on the front-row.
Payne won the start and led the way from pole as Feeney made a good jump, but got wheelsman during the second phase to drop back. Thomas Randle went the outside to avoid the slow Red Bull Ampol Racing Mustang as Feeney moved to the inside to defend Kai Allen.
Randle lost positions as he and Allen went side-by-side through the Turns 3-4 flip-flop, with the Monster Castrol Racing driver losing out to Andre Heimgartner first, then reigning champion Chaz Mostert.
Jackson Walls, Zach Bates, Cooper Murray and Aaron Cameron all were involved in mischief at the back of the pack, though all survived.
Mostert was first of the leaders to pit on lap 16, with Allen doing likewise six circuits later to try and jump Feeney in an undercut, but Red Bull Ampol Racing pulled its driver in next time around.
Payne was in control at the front when he pitted on lap 25, but the race began to unravel when he was released into a battling pack at the tail of the field.
This in essence opened the door for Feeney as he closed considerably to be on Payne’s boot lid when an opportunity arose.
Cameron had Payne right behind him when he ducked into pit lane for his compulsory stop, which delayed the Penrite Racing driver and allowed Feeney to slide down the inside at Turn 1.
It was a lead Feeney failed to relinquish as Payne trailed home in second ahead of his teammate Allen.
Mostert fended off Will Brown for fourth, with Brodie Kostecki, Heimgartner, Wood, Waters and Randle completed the top 10.
Sunday Repco Supercars Championship begins at 11:00am AWST/1:00pm AEST with Qualifying.
