Broc Feeney edges Chaz Mostert to claim home pole in Gold Coast Shootout

Broc Feeney has secured pole position for the opening race of the 2026 Repco Supercars Finals Series after edging out reigning champion Chaz Mostert in a thrilling Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout on the Gold Coast.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver delivered a stunning lap of 1:11.1369 to put his #88 Ford Mustang at the top of the timesheets, beating the #1 Toyota GR Supra of Mostert by just 0.1254 seconds after both drivers pushed to the limit around the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit.

Anton De Pasquale finished third, securing his best-ever Gold Coast starting position in the #18 Chevrolet Camaro, while Andre Heimgartner impressed in fourth for Brad Jones Racing. Championship leader Matt Payne completed the top five, ahead of Thomas Randle, Will Brown, Cam Waters, Kai Allen and Ryan Wood.

With rain threatening throughout the session, drivers faced a changing circuit after overnight and early morning showers washed away much of the grip built up during Friday’s running. Cam Waters was first on track and set an initial benchmark of 1:12.5155, more than three seconds slower than De Pasquale’s provisional pole time from qualifying.

Kai Allen was next to take to the circuit but suffered an awkward moment over the Turn 2 kerb, losing valuable time on his way to a 1:13.5794. Thomas Randle subsequently moved to the top with a 1:12.2485, finding three tenths on his Tickford teammate through the Beach Chicane.

Will Brown then produced a competitive run despite carrying a two-place grid penalty for impeding Jack Le Brocq during Friday’s qualifying session. The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver recovered time in the final sector to post a 1:12.2546, just 0.0061 seconds behind Randle.

Ryan Wood briefly looked set to challenge for the top position after flying through the opening sector, but a kerb strike at the final part of the Beach Chicane compromised his lap and left the Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver towards the bottom of the top 10.

His teammate Mostert then raised the benchmark considerably, producing an aggressive lap that included clipping the tyre bundle at the Beach Chicane and brushing the wall on the exit of Turn 13. Despite the close calls, Mostert clocked a 1:11.2623, almost a second clear of the field at the time.

Rain began to sprinkle across the circuit as Andre Heimgartner prepared for his run, but the Brad Jones Racing driver made the most of a fresh set of tyres to secure second provisionally with a 1:11.6223.

Payne was unable to match Mostert’s pace, recording a 1:11.8699 to provisionally take third before Feeney delivered the decisive lap, finding time through both chicanes and narrowly grazing the wall at Turn 11 on his way to a 1:11.1369.

De Pasquale came close in the opening sector, but the Team 18 driver could not match Feeney’s pace through the middle of the lap. His time was nevertheless enough to secure third, marking his best starting position on the Gold Coast.

Heimgartner joined De Pasquale on the second row, capping off a strong Shootout performance for Brad Jones Racing, while Payne and Randle secured fifth and sixth respectively.

Brown finished seventh on outright pace but will drop two positions because of his penalty, promoting Waters and Allen ahead of the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver on the final grid. Wood completed the top 10.

Feeney’s pole position sets up an intriguing opening race, with the championship contenders starting alongside one another at the front as the 2026 Finals Series gets underway.

The opening 85-lap race of the 2026 Repco Supercars Finals Series is scheduled to begin at 3:15pm local time (4:15pm AEDT).
