Brodie Kostecki and Matt Payne split the poles at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix

Despite throwing up in his helmet Brodie Kostecki has scored pole for Race 1 at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and Matt Payne did likewise for the second event of the round.

Kostecki jumped out of his Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang at the end of the first 10-minute session to clean his helmet, suit and wipe his face making the effort to score pole even more impressive.

A 1m 47.610s did the job for Kostecki as he defeated Blanchard Racing Team’s James Golding by 0.043s to take pole.

Repco Supercars Championship leader Broc Feeney was third for Red Bull Ampol Racing from Penrite Racing’s Payne, Chaz Mostert in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Toyota Supra and Aaron Cameron for LIQUIMOLY Blahst Racing.

Anton De Pasquale led the Chevrolets in seventh for DEWALT Racing ahead of Cam Waters in the lead Monster Castrol Racing Mustang, Ryan Wood’s Mobil 1 Truck Assist Toyota and the Erebus Motorsport Camaro of Cooper Murray.

Two entries were non-starters as Jayden Ojeda’s PremiAIr Racing Camaro is still being repaired from its practice incident and Macauley Jones’ Supra failed to start on the dummy grid.

Qualifying for Race 2 at Albert Park fell the way of Payne by setting a 1m 47.437s to pip Kostecki by just 0.032s.

Walkinshaw TWG Racing drivers Wood and Mostert lock-out the second row, with Feeney and Murray completing the third.

De Pasquale lines up seventh alongside Cameron, Matt Stone Racing’s Jack Le Brocq and Red Bull Ampol Racing Will Brown.

Missing out on a top 10 berth were Waters, Cam Hill, Allen, Thomas Randle and David Reynolds.

The opening race of the weekend begins at 4:55pm AEDT.
