Brodie Kostecki continues late-season form to win Gold Coast final

It was a lights-to-flag victory for Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki as he continued his  race winning late-season form at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

Kostecki secured victory as the battle between Red Bull Ampol Racing teammates Will Brown and Broc Feeney has intensified after the duo rounded out the podium.

Ford’s leading contender Chaz Mostert endured late-race heartbreak when his Walkinshaw Andretti United team mistakenly used the wrong fuel rig necessitating a third stop for the Mobil 1 Optus Racing driver.

The race started in spectacular fashion when a pile up at Turn 11 caught out many drivers instigated by Ryan Wood running wide in the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing Mustang.

This was as a result of Richie Stanaway firing down the inside of Anton De Pasquale, with Wood forced wide into the tyre wall. De Pasquale was then spun by James Courtney, with Nick Percat sustaining damage to the Bendix Racing Camaro.

A safety car was required as the back half of the field were momentarily stuck as the track was blocked.

Kostecki led Brown at the restart as Mostert put pressure on the championship leader, with Thomas Randle fighting off James Golding for the final positions inside the top five.

Golding was out of the running when he suffered the second disastrous stop in as many days when the PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro was dropped without its right rear wheel.

There was a worry for Feeney when smoke built up after disposing of Matt Payne, but this quickly cleared and he emerged in front of the Penrite Racing Mustang when the pit stop cycle concluded.

This put Feeney in fourth behind Kostecki, Brown and Mostert, but his title rival had a steering problem to deal with in the second Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro.

Waters was unable to replicate his result from yesterday finishing off the podium in fourth after hitting the tyre wall at Turn 3.

Randle finished fifth from Andre Heimgartner, Stanaway, Jack Le Brocq, Payne and David Reynolds.

Brown leads Feeney by 180-points heading to the final round of the Repco Supercars Championship, the VAILO Adelaide 500, with the two Red Bull Ampol Racing drivers the only ones remaining in contention.
