Cam Waters opens the season on pole in Sydney

Monster Castrol Racing’s Cam Waters continues to master qualifying after securing the Boost Mobile Pole Award last year, he has continued this form to seal the prime position for the Sydney opener.

Waters secured pole with a 1m 28.690s to pip predicted title rival Broc Feeney, who led the Red Bull Ampol Racing charge in second just 0.254s after teammate and reigning champion Will Brown missed the second segment of qualifying in 11th.

It was double delight for Penrite Racing as Matt Payne was third and rookie Kai Allen 10th at the end of the two-part qualifying session.

The 2024 champion Brodie Kostecki was fourth for his new squad Shell V-Power Racing Team ahead of Waters’ teammate Thomas Randle, R&J Batteries Racing driver Andre Heimgartner and Ryan Wood was seventh ahead of his Walkinshaw Andretti United leader Chaz Mostert.

Bryce Fullwood in the Middy’s Racing Camaro was ninth ahead of Allen to complete the top 10.

The sun played a part during the 10-minute opening session, but a major incident was avoided when James Golding on a hot lap encountered Macauley Jones weaving to warm tyres before his final attempt. Quick reflexes from Golding prevented the two from making contact and Jones will go before the stewards after being adjudged to impede.

Brown was joined by Cam Hill, Jack Le Brocq, Nick Percat and Anton De Pasquale outside the top 10.

David Reynolds, Richie Stanaway and Golding also missed.

The opening race of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship season will be on Fox Sports 506 and Kayo at 7:50pm AEDT.
