A scintillating performance from Monster Energy Racing’s Cam Waters has given the Ford driver pole position for this afternoon’s Race 13 of the Repco Supercars Championship at Hidden Valley, Darwin.
Waters set a 1m 05.902s to top the timesheets in the final segment of qualifying to edge Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney by 0.105s as veteran Mark Winterbottom was third fastest in his best qualifying result of season driving the DEWALT Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
Reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen overcame a shortened run in practice to line-up fourth from Will Davison in the lead Shell V-Power Racing Team Ford Mustang. Hometown driver Bryce Fullwood was sixth in the Middy’s Racing Chevrolet ahead of Nulon Racing pair James Golding and Tim Slade. Scott Pye in the Hino Camaro led Thomas Randle’s Castrol Racing entry to complete the top 10.
Missing from the final segment included championship leader Brodie Kostecki as he placed 11th, Anton De Pasquale in 14th, Andre Heimgartner will start 15th, Chaz Mostert 17th and Will Brown a disappointing 19th.
Further struggles were encountered by David Reynolds in 23rd and 26th for Nick Percat.
Waters was lucky to make it out of the first segment of qualifying as he placed 20th in a bid to save tyres, but it nearly cost him to the tune of 0.001s.
The opening race of the Darwin Triple Crown is set to start at 3:25pm ACST/3:55pm AEST.
