Cam Waters takes pole for second Townsville leg

Cam Waters has finished fastest in the Top 10 shootout ahead of Race 17 at the NTI Townsville 500 as the Monster Energy Racing Ford Mustang conquered the slippery conditions to score pole.

Being the penultimate driver in the Top 10 Shootout, Waters set a 1m 14.418s to eclipse Jack Le Brocq’s benchmark by 0.164s, but there was controversy as burnouts prior to the session led to track conditions being slippery.

Le Brocq will share the front row in the Truck Assist Racing Camaro as Thomas Randle qualified third in the Castrol Racing Mustang to be alongside provisional polesitter from qualifying Brodie Kostecki in the lead Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus Chevrolet.

Penrite Racing veteran David Reynolds was fifth and will have Anton De Pasquale for company on the third row in the first Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang as his teammate Will Davison is a position behind.

Alongside Davison is Brad Jones Racing’s lead contender in Andre Heimgartner for R&J Batteries, while the first driver out Will Brown was ninth.

Mobil 1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert grazed the wall on his hot lap and pulled out of his lap.

The earlier qualifying session was headed by Kostecki, but Shane van Gisbergen will start last after a rare mistake at Turn 11 as he ran down the escape road.

Others joining the Red Bull Ampol Racing star in missing the Top 10 Shootout included Matt Payne, Scott Pye, teammate Broc Feeney, James Golding and Bryce Fullwood filling 11th to 15th. James Courtney was 17th, Mark Winterbottom 20th and Nick Percat was 22nd.

The final 250km race in Townsville is due to commence at 2:40pm AEST.
