Cameron Waters scores first Tasmanian victory

Cameron Waters has added another piece of silverware after securing victory in Race 18 at Symmons Plains as part of the NED Whiskey Tasmanian SuperSprint.

Waters took the lead when Monster Castrol Racing teammate Thomas Randle ran wide at Turn 4 on lap 1 and never relented it as he secured Tickford Racing’s first win in Tasmania since 2012.

Finishing second was championship leader Will Brown after battling Randle, but there was disaster for the latter as he tangled with Broc Feeney at Turn 4 resulting in a 15s penalty and 18th after scoring pole earlier in the day.

Picking up the pieces was Bryce Fullwood in the Middy’s Racing Camaro to secure third.

It was an action-packed race as Randle won the start before making a mistake at Turn 4 allowing Waters through, while at the penultimate corner Cameron Hill ventured through the sand trap.

On the third lap, Brodie Kostecki spun David Reynolds to initiate the first safety car as the TRADIE Beer Racing Camaro was stuck on the inside of the hairpin.

Kostecki’s race was fraught following this as he was slapped with a 15s penalty and two drive throughs after speeding in pit lane in addition to an unsafe release.

Waters still held the lead until a second safety car was required when Aaron Love collided with Jaxon Evans on the front stretch sending the SCT Motorsport Camaro into the inside fence.

From there the only drama came from the Randle contact with Feeney as Waters took the win from Brown, Fullwood and the recovering Chaz Mostert of Mobil 1 Optus Racing.

Erebus Motorsport’s Jack Le Brocq completed the top five ahead of Andre Heimgartner’s R&J Batteries Camaro, while Nick Percat climbed up 17 positions to score seventh for Bendix Racing.

Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing’s Ryan Wood scored eighth from Mark Winterbottom in the Cub Cadet Racing Camaro, while completing the top 10 was Tim Slade for PremiAir Nulon Racing.

Will Davison, Cameron Hill, James Golding and Anton De Pasquale finished ahead of Feeney in 15th.

Brown’s lead in the title is now at 81 ahead of Mostert as Feeney lost ground to be a further 117-points.

The next round of the Repco Supercars Championship is the first of the endurance races, the Sandown 500 on September 13-15.
