Chaotic end to opening day on the Gold Coast

Day 1 on the Gold Coast for the Repco Supercars Championship ended in a chaotic final practice session, with the tight street circuit catching further victims.

Monster Castrol Racing’s Cam Waters avoided the incidents to end the day fastest, but Ryan Wood, Bryce Fullwood and Brodie Kostecki were all caught out in various ways.

Wood sent his Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing Ford Mustang flying into the air at the Beach Chicane, but was able to escape relatively unscathed to set the second quickest time.

The Beach Chicane welcomed its second victim when a minor mistake by Bryce Fullwood sent the Shure-supported Brad Jones Racing Camaro into the outside wall exiting the brutal section.

Finally, Kostecki came to grief at Turn 10 after locking up on entry and skidding the Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang into the tyre wall.

At the front, Waters led a Ford Mustang 1-2-3 from Wood and Kai Allen after setting a 1m 08.573s.

David Reynolds was the first Chevrolet Camaro in the TRADIE Energy Racing entry to be fourth ahead of Mobil 1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert, Penrite Racing driver Matt Payne and Kostecki despite his off.

James Golding was one of three Chevrolets in eighth for PremiAir Racing from Monster Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle and Anton De Pasquale for DEWALT Racing.

Broc Feeney was 11th from James Courtney, Will Brown, Andre Heimgartner and Nick Percat.

Action on the Gold Coast for the Repco Supercars Championship continues at 11:00am AEST/12:00pm AEDT for Qualifying.
