Chaotic third practice session at Bathurst

It was a chaotic third practice session leading up to the 2024 Repco Bathurst 1000 courtesy of multiple incidents leading to red flags.

Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup emerged from the session at the top of the timesheets, but many rivals either found the gravel trap or the wall around the Mountain.

Feeney and Whincup avoided the drama to record a 2m 07.842s ending the session on top by 0.061s, but the discussion following the session surrounded Matt Stone Racing.

Both of the MSR Chevrolet Camaro ZL1s were damaged in separate incidents requiring significant repairs ahead of the fourth practice session later this afternoon.

First in the fence was Cameron Crick as he hit the concrete just prior to Forrest’s Elbow. Losing the rear, the Camaro hit the concrete and rolled into Forrest’s Elbow causing a red flag. Crick exited unaided straight into the medical car for precautionary checks.

When the session returned to green, SCT Motorsport’s Jaxon Evans found the gravel trap at Hell Corner, but was undamaged as the red flag came out again to remove the stricken Camaro.

The final stoppage was for Dylan O’Keeffe as he hit the tyre wall heavily at Griffins Bend in the Matt Stone Racing Camaro shared with Nick Percat. Pitching into the outside tyre wall, O’Keeffe in the Camaro rested in the middle of the circuit as the Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet of Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood took to the inside grass to miss it. The session was immediately stopped.

Behind the lead Red Bull Ampol Racing entry was Monster Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle and Tyler Everingham from the Snowy River Racing Mustang of James Courtney sharing alongside Jack Perkins.

Penrite Racing filled out fourth place courtesy of Richie Stanaway and Dale Wood, with Chaz Mostert leading the way for Walkinshaw Andretti United to make it four Mustangs in the top five partnered by Lee Holdsworth.

Erebus Motorsport’s Jack Le Brocq/Jayden Ojeda were sixth ahead of Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Will Davison, the Percat/O’Keeffe Camaro, the repaired Will Brown/Scott Pye Red Bull Ampol Racing and the MSR Chevrolet of Cameron Hill.

The fourth practice session of the weekend is at 1:05pm AEDT and qualifying to decide positions 11 to 24 will be at 4:15pm AEDT.
