D1NZ doubleheader opens season at Taupo

The Repco D1NZ National Drifting Championship opened up with a doubleheader at Taupo International Motorsport Park on January 31-February 2.

The twin opening for the new season was a true battle of the Tasman as Australian invaders took it up to the local competition.

Fanga Dan Woolhouse was top qualifier for Round 1 in the Pro Class and Adam Davies even the score for the weekend’s second event.

However, it was dual Australian Drift Pro Series Champion Brodie Maher in his first international competition winning the opening round in his Nissan Onevia. Maher encountered a couple of minor dramas including a bent LCA in his Top 8 battle against Jeff Jones.

It was a tough all-Australian final battle due to both Maher and Luke Fink leaving the track, but the latter went off more comprehensively while leading the second run.

In Round 2, it was a fight back from the locals as Adam Davies secured the win after Fink experienced a mechanical failure at the beginning of the first run. Fink was indeed picking up broken parts after he had stopped.

Fink leads the points by 22-points from Davies by 22-points, with Maher a further two behind.

ProSport was led by Blake Myles after qualifying, but it was Guy Maxwell in The Choice Files Nissan S13 Silvia taking out the opening round and Corbyn Wilson secured the second event of the weekend to lead a 22-point advantage.

The next round of Repco D1NZ heads to the Mt Smart Stadium for a night round on March 7-8.
