Group A was dying a slow death in Australia and two years after the VN model range was released, Holden through HSV released its last homologation special.
Following on from the radical VL SS Group A, the VN example was much more sedate in design and received special dispensation to compete although it failed to meet the minimum production number for homologation.
Holden was struggling at this stage and there were compromises led by the installation of a live rear axle instead of the independent rear suspension planned.
Powered by the 215kW Holden 5.0-litre V8, the VN SS was easy to tune to suit the racing application of the model, while a ZF six-speed gearbox sent the power to the rear wheels.
Released in Durif Red and featuring a bespoke aerodynamic kit, the VN SS Group A was one of the first Australian models to feature 18-inch rims.
Bilstein provided the suspension and brakes were very capability with twin piston calipers and 330mm rotors up front, while it was 260mm on the rear.
Just 302 were produced and being the last homologation offering from Holden, it has become quite valuable.
