From producing economical, entry-level hatchbacks to entering the premium stage, Hyundai is a manufacturer to experience massive growth entering its 40th year in Australia.
Perth-based pair dealer John Hughes and flamboyant entrepreneur Alan Bond won the distribution rights for Hyundai in Australia back in 1986, with just eight units of the Excel being sold in the first month.
Fast forward four decades and Hyundai has since sold more than 2.2 million units to be one of the leading manufacturers on sale in Australia.
At 90-years-old, Hughes remains passionate and invested towards the brand he brought to Australia.
“I can remember that we only sold a total of eight cars in our very first month back in 1986, however by the end of the year a respectable 1,756 Hyundai cars had been sold,” said Mr. Hughes.
“I’ve enjoyed a wonderful ride with the Hyundai brand, so much so, that starting in the late 90’s we were the biggest selling Hyundai dealership in the world for six consecutive years. The product has stood the test of time and has now grown to be a household name in Australia. It gives me a great feeling of pride every time I see one of my valued customers driving a brand-new Hyundai off our showroom floor.”
Hyundai’s success in Australia was arguably driven by the Excel hatchback, which has gained cult status due to its cheap driveway price, reliability and quirky design.
More than 250,000 Excels were sold in Australia to provide the basis for Hyundai’s expanded model line-up to this day. This is continued via the i30, which has sold more than 450,000 units since its launch in 2007 making it Hyundai’s most popular model sold in Australia.
Hyundai has gone through many developments including the introduction of its performance N-Line range, transition to electric options and even success on the track.
The Korean manufacturer has achieved plenty during its 40-years in Australia and continues to grow its standing in the local marketplace.
