Image Racing Super2 driver Jack Perkins will pay tribute to his father Larry and his 1993 Bathurst win by running a retro livery starting with the Sandown 500 this weekend.
Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Larry and Gregg Hansford success at the Mountain in the last Holden engine to greet the chequered flag.
The iconic appearance of Castrol’s trademark red, white and black on the side of Perkins’ ZB Commodore will be paired with his father’s customary racing number, 11 although he will still use 70 as his official number.
Revealing this retro livery follows the first shakedown for the 1993 Bathurst winning VP Commodore since a ground up rebuild completed by Perkins.
“It’s a really cool tribute to be able to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dad’s win in ‘93 and the first win for his own team,” Perkins said.
“The original car was also the last Holden engine to win at Bathurst and was Perkins Engineering’s first Bathurst win as a team so there’s a lot of history there and it’s been a really cool fit.
“It’s a huge credit to everyone who made this possible and a special thank you to Shaw and Partners for really sharing mine and Dad’s passion for the history of the sport.”
Larry went onto further Bathurst victories in 1995 and 1997 alongside Russell Ingall after Hansford passed away following a Super Touring crash at Phillip Island in early-1995.
“The livery certainly brings back memories and it just looks fantastic, simple as that,” Larry said.
“I can still hear the crowd’s tremendous roar in support of us back in ‘93 when we got pole position and won the race so I think this new livery will certainly trigger a few memories from some of the diehard fans.
“I think the fans will really enjoy it and Jack and his team have done a great job at restoring the original car so to see Jack’s newly designed Erebus car side by side with the original is just fantastic.
“The shakedown at Calder went really well so I’m excited to give it another go around the Mountain in October.”
Perkins will combine his Super2 program with a co-driver role alongside Will Brown in on e of the race favourites, the Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 at the Sandown 500 on September 15-17.
