James Moffat fastest, Red Bull friendly fire in second co-driver only session

Monster Castrol Racing’s James Moffat led the way in the final co-driver only practice session leading into The Bend 500, but a safety car procedure dress rehearsal provided some headaches for Red Bull Ampol Racing.

Just like during yesterday’s final practice session, race control completed another run through of the new safety car procedure leading to contact between the two Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaros.

Scott Pye decelerated rapidly ahead of one of the new slow zones, but Jamie Whincup right behind did not, leading to heavy contact.

This plucked the left-rear corner out of Pye’s Camaro, while remarkably Whincup completed the session.

But at the top of the timesheets it was Moffat after setting a 1m 50.738s to finish 0.186s ahead of TRADIE Racing’s Lee Holdsworth.

Young gun Rylan Gray led a succession of the Wildcards in third for Tickford Racing from Matt Stone Racing’s Aaron Seton and Zach Bates in the Triple Eight Race Engineering entry.

The R&J Batteries Racing Camaro of Declan Fraser was sixth ahead of Monster Castrol Racing’s Mark Winterbottom, Jayden Ojeda for Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing and the DEWALT Racing Camaro of Harry Jones.

Fabian Coulthard completed the top 10 in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang.

Tony D’Alberto, Jordan Boys, Cameron McLeod, Jack Smith and Whincup after his earlier troubles just missed the top 10.

The Repco Supercars Championship will have one more practice session at 12:00pm ACST/12:30pm AEST ahead of qualifying and the Top 10 Shootout later on in the program.
