Last gasp lap hands Cam Waters Friday sweep

Monster Castrol Racing’s Cam Waters has swept both sessions on the opening day at Townsville after topping the second practice session.

On his last flying lap, Waters set a 1m 13.837s to pip Erebus Motorsport’s Jack Le Brocq by a mere 0.059s, with DEWALT Racing veteran Mark Winterbottom rounding out the top three.

Waters’ teammate Thomas Randle continued Tickford Racing’s strong form to be fourth ahead of Chaz Mostert as he rebounded from a disappointing opening session to be fifth for Mobil 1 Optus Racing.

Andre Heimgartner replicated his opening practice form to place the R&J Batteries Racing Camaro in sixth ahead of fellow New Zealander Matt Payne of Penrite Racing, reigning Repco Supercars Championship winner Brodie Kostecki, the Middy’s Racing Chevrolet of Bryce Fullwood and Broc Feeney for Red Bull Ampol Racing.

Nick Percat just missed the top 10 from championship leader Will Brown, Anton De Pasquale, Will Davison and David Reynolds.

Action continues tomorrow as qualifying, a Top 10 Shootout and Race 13 will be held starting at 10:15am AEST.
