Matt Payne sets stunning time to take provisional pole

Repco Supercars Championship rookie Matt Payne has set a stunning lap toe to secure provisional pole position ahead of the Top 10 Shootout this afternoon.

Payne set the pace on a 1m 19.098s after a red flag interrupted the session when fellow rookie Cameron Hill found the wall on the outside of Turn 8, which flicked the Turck Assist Racing Chevrolet Camaro into the inside wall leading to significant damage. The Matt Stone Racing crew is working hard to make repairs ahead of Race 28.

Payne held a significant margin to yesterday’s race winner Cam Waters in second by 0.299s in the Monster Energy Racing Mustang.

Also qualifying for the Top 10 Shootout was Payne’s Penrite Racing teammate David Reynolds, Broc Feeney leads the Camaro charge in his Red Bull Ampol Racing example after a last gasp lap, Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle, Chaz Mostert for Mobil 1 Optus Racing, championship winner Brodie Kostecki for Coca Cola Racing by Erebus and the R&J Batteries Chevrolet of Andre Heimgartner.

Todd Hazelwood in his final start for the Blanchard Racing Team was ninth and James Golding filled out the final spot in the Nulon Racing Camaro.

Just missing included Will Brown, Jack Le Brocq, Will Davison, Anton De Pasquale and Shane van Gisbergen, who will be one to watch.
