Mixed emotions for Red Bull Ampol as Will Brown seals title with victory

A chaotic and dramatic final race at the VAILO Adelaide 500 completed the Repco Supercars Championship season, with Will Brown scoring victory number seven for the season.

Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Broc Feeney crossed the line first, but was handed two separate 15 second penalties. The first was for an unsafe release after the first pit stop when his crew released him into the path of race rival Chaz Mostert, while the second came after Feeney spun the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Mustang at Turn 6.

Brown himself had been spun on lap 9 when a tight battle for the lead concertinaed resulting in Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki making contact with the champion-elect.

An impressive recovery drive followed elevating him to second as Brown took full advantage to end his title winning season with victory.

Mostert led from the start and held on against the Red Bull Camaros throughout the opening stanza, which was neutralised on lap 3 by a safety car.

This was in response to Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne becoming stuck in the tyre wall at Turn 11 following contact from Nick Percat.

Mostert was able to hold on as the Red Bull Camaros attacked as first Feeney, then Brown attempted a pass. This slowed the trio as Kostecki tried to slide past, but contact was inevitable spinning Brown.

A 15s penalty to the reigning champ was handed out.

Further contact was made between Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Anton De Pasquale and Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing rookie Ryan Wood leading to Cam Waters’ Monster Castrol Racing Mustang climbing Will Davison’s entry.

Erebus Motorsport’s Cooper Murray was also a victim ending in the tyre wall.

Full-time retirees Tim Slade and Mark Winterbottom also added to the drama by colliding, with the Nulon PremiAir Racing Camaro spinning.

Brown’s recovery effort was already up to ninth after the first pit stop sequence.

By the second stops, the race had calmed down until when Feeney was released into the path of Mostert and although there was an effort to re-dress, a penalty was still forthcoming.

Mostert led and held on against Feeney, until contact was made at Turn 6 with 16 laps to go.

Brown was in the box seat and passed a wounded Mostert to seal victory, with Monster Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle winning an all-mighty battle for third.

Davison, Percat, Kostecki, Feeney, Nulon PremiAir Racing’s James Golding, Andre Heimgartner in the R&J Batteries Racing Camaro and Waters rounded out the top 10.

The opening round of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park  on February 21-23.
