The overcoat worked perfectly for Nick Percat as the Bendix Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 took the chequered flag in Race 17 at Symmons Plains.
In an uninterrupted encounter, Percat took the lead after the stops over cutting Cameron Waters by two laps and Broc Feeney by one, but it was a storming effort from Chaz Mostert providing a late race challenge.
Percat made the best jump at the start to take third immediately from reigning champion Brodie Kostecki in the Erebus Motorsport Camaro, but it was the Red Bull Ampol Racing Chevrolet of Feeney leading the way.
The Monster Castrol Racing Mustang of Waters was always in touch throughout the stint and was the first to pit on lap 27 due to the increasing traffic as the stop sequence worked its way through.
Feeney followed a lap later to cover Waters, but it opened the door for Percat as the Matt Stone Racing brain’s trust elected to run longer and it paid dividends.
Percat managed to hold off Feeney, but it was Mostert that was a concern when he overtook the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver during the closing stages.
However, Mostert was unable to find a way through as Percat took his second win of the season and the first since the Australian Grand Prix.
Outside the top three, Waters was fourth ahead of Kostecki, Cameron Hill, Will Brown, Tim Slade, David Reynolds and Bryce Fullwood completed the top 10.
Brown recovered well from qualifying 15th to limit the damage as he holds a 63-point margin heading into Race 18 tomorrow at Symmons Plains.
