New Bathurst book marks 60 year anniversary

This edition of the Repco Bathurst 1000 marks the 60th years since the race was hosted at Mount Panorama and a new book has been released to commemorate the occasion.

Written by noted motorsport author Aaron Noonan and published by HarperCollins Australia, ‘The Great Race – 60 Years of the Bathurst 1000’ has been released today as the countdown is on until the traditional pilgrimage to Mount Panorama.

Five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Garth Tander provides the foreword to a book containing a collection of insights and stories covering the six decades of Australia’s premier touring car race. Ranging from its impact on the Australian motorsport and sporting landscape to the famous races, cars, drivers and traditions, the book details all.

The journey starts in 1963 when it was a 500-mile race for standard production cars to the professional race run today as the Repco Bathurst 1000 for purpose-built Supercars.

Of course the age old battle of Ford vs Holden is covered alongside heroes including Peter Brock, Dick Johnson, Allan Moffat, Craig Lowndes, Mark Skaife and many more. Not forgetting the famous cars these drivers hurtled around the Mountain, a special content includes what became of these since competition.

It’s an eye-opening story of how a scenic tourist road developed into Australia’s leading race circuit and most famous event, one envied by many globally.

“I’ve really enjoyed sitting down and putting this book together, drawing upon many years of studying this race and chatting with the people who have played pivotal roles in it,” said Noonan.

“I think there’s something for everyone in this book, from hardcore motorsport fanatic to the casual sports fans and casual readers. It’s no doubt the perfect Father’s Day gift.”

The book is available to purchase now at the V8 Sleuth SuperStore website.
