Pole for Ryan Wood on the Gold Coast

Finals contender Ryan Wood has made a great start to making the next stage by scoring pole for the opening race of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

Wood set the pace in the Top 10 Shootout by just 0.043s after setting a 1m 09.201s, with Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney lining up alongside in second.

Repco Bathurst 1000 winner Matt Payne was third and will share the second row with Mobil 1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert.

James Golding continued his hot form from Bathurst to place fifth in the PremiAir Racing Chevrolet Camaro and will line up alongside Monster Castrol Racing’s Cam Waters, while James Courtney sprung a surprise to put the Snowy River Racing Mustang in seventh alongside TRADIE Energy Racing’s David Reynolds.

Anton De Pasquale secured ninth in the Cub Cadet Racing Chevrolet Camaro, while Will Brown crashed at the Beach Chicane forcing the Red Bull Ampol Racing crew to work hard ahead of Race 28 to repair the damage.

Qualifying earlier hurt three Finals contenders headlined by a massive crash for Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Brodie Kostecki at Turn 2, which resulted in four photographers being hospitalised.

This stoppage to the session with just seconds remaining led to Kai Allen and Thomas Randle both forcing to pull out of their fast laps.

Nick Percat, Allen, André Heimgartner, Randle and Cooper Murray just missed the top 10.

Race 28 of the Repco Supercars Championship will begin at 3:15pm AEST/4:15pm AEDT.
