Motorsport great Jacky Ickx was reunited with the Ford XC Falcon and Trophy he won alongside Allan Moffat at Bathurst in 1977 as part of the lead up to the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour.
Ickx is attending as a guest of Genesis and will drive its X Gran Berlinetta Concept at the Mountain, which was created for the famed Polyphony Gran Turismo game series where is has been available to drive in the virtual world since 2024.
The Belgian driver is a true all-rounder in motorsport having won eight Grands Prix during a 13-year Formula 1 career, scoring six 24 Hours of Le Mans victories, two World Endurance Championships, two Sebring 12 Hours and has taken line honours in the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1983.
Moffat invited Ickx to contest Australia’s most prestigious motor race alongside him in 1977 and it proved a culture shock compared to the Grand Prix machines he was used to.
It resulted in a famous victory for the Moffat Ford Dealers squad as the two team XC Falcons ran the final lap side-by-side and embarrassed rivals Holden.
Moffat ran the last dozen laps without brakes as teammate Colin Bond closed to maintain a memorable 1-2 finish as displayed by manager Carroll Smith.
The winning Falcon is part of the display in the National Motor Racing Museum on the outside of Murray’s Corner, which was wheeled out to pit lane specially for the event.
Also reunited was the winning trophy from the 1977 Bathurst 1000 donated on behalf of the Moffat family, which will reside in the National Motor Racing Museum alongside the winning Falcon.
