Richie Stanaway puts Penrite Racing on top approaching qualifying in Tasmania

New Zealander Richie Stanaway will lead into knockout qualifying at Symmons Plains with confidence after finishing the second practice session on top of the timesheets.

Wet, treacherous conditions are what the drivers encountered for the Repco Supercars Championship’s second session of the weekend, as rookies Ryan Wood and Aaron Love found trouble.

Wood ran into the Turn 4 sand trap, while Love’s incident on the front straight resulted in four spins and a scary moment as he tried to recover the situation when he reversed as Stanaway narrowly missed his stricken Mustang.

Stanaway still topped the times on a 54.455s from Cameron Waters in the lead Monster Castrol Racing Mustang by 0.052s.

Chaz Mostert completed a Ford 1-2-3 in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing example as the first Camaro was Bryce Fullwood’s Middy’s Racing entry.

Wood recovered to be fifth for Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing, with Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki, the two Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaros of Will Brown and Broc Feeney, with Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne in ninth ahead of R&J Batteries Racing’s Andre Heimgartner.

Just missing the top 10 were Anton De Pasquale, David Reynolds, Cam Waters, James Courtney and Jack Le Brocq.

Further back were Will Davison in 16th, Mark Winterbottom in 21st and Cameron Hill was 24th due to a leak inside his Camaro.
