Rookie on top after practice in Sydney

The Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight has opened up with an evening practice session and it was Mobil 1 NTI Racing’s Ryan Wood setting the pace following 90-minutes of running.

Wood set the pace with a late 1m 30.584s lap to pip Bendix Racing’s Nick Percat by just 0.042s.

In a good evening for Walkinshaw Andretti United, Chaz Mostert was third just 0.082s off his teammate for Mobil 1 Optus Racing.

Championship leader Will Brown was fourth in the Red Bull Ampol Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, with Percat’s Matt Stone Racing teammate Cameron Hill completing the top five in an impressive performance representing Supaglass Industries this weekend.

Title challenger Cam Waters was sixth for Monster Castrol Racing from Andre Heimgartner’s R&J Batteries Racing Camaro, Anton De Pasquale of Shell V-Power Racing Team, James Courtney in the Snowy River Racing Mustang and Broc Feeney driving the second Red Bull Ampol Racing Chevrolet.

Just missing a top 10 berth were Thomas Randle, Brodie Kostecki, Aaron Love in his best session result of his maiden season, Mark Winterbottom, Matt Payne, Jack Le Brocq, Will Davison and David Reynolds.

Tickford Racing’s Wildcard driver Lochie Dalton was 23rd.

Penrite Racing endured trouble early thanks to Payne’s Mustang requiring a new tailshaft, which repaired allowing the New Zealand to complete the session.

Qualifying is up next for the Repco Supercars Championship at 2:50pm AEST tomorrow.
