Scott Pye paces shortened opening Gold Coast session

Team 18’s Scott Pye has ended a shortened opening practice session on the Gold Coast at the top of the timesheets.

Pye set a 1m 11.557 to lead the Monster Energy Racing Ford Mustang of Cam Waters by 0.086s as the opening session was halted with six minutes remaining following a loose piece of kerbing lying in the middle of the first chicane.

Power steering problems prevented Declan Fraser, Thomas Randle and David Reynolds from setting a respective time as changeable conditions provided an early challenge before the rain cleared.

Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus driver Will Brown was third from Bathurst 1000 winner Shane van Gisbergen in his Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro and Will Davison rounded out the top five in his Shell V-Power Racing Team Ford Mustang.

Completing the top 10 were Mark Winterbottom in the DEWALT Racing Camaro, Walkinshaw Andretti United teammates Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert, the R&J Batteries entry of Andre Heimgartner and rookie Matt Payne in the Penrite Racing Ford.

Due to the early finish to the session, championship leader Brodie Kostecki was 11th, Broc Feeney finishing 18th and Anton De Pasquale 19th all were down the leaderboard.

Another practice session is to follow at 3:30pm AEST (4:30pm AEDT).
