Conditions failed to relent for the opening co-driver practice session at the Repco Bathurst 1000 and it caught a couple of teams out.
Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Scott Pye set the pace in the treacherous track conditions on a 2m 06.839s, but the likes of Harri Jones and Cam McLeod failed to make it out of the session unscathed.
Jones sharing the DEWALT Racing Chevrolet Camaro alongside Anton De Pasquale was first to make contact with the unforgiving concrete at Bathurst on the exit of The Chase. Significant damage was done to the left-hand-side due to the heavy side-on contact, but it is expected to be fixed for the first session on Friday.
McLeod went off at the top in the Supaglass Racing Camaro, but there was minimal damage after nudging the tyre wall.
Just 0.146s behind Pye at the end of the session was the PremiAir Racing Camaro of David Russell, while Tony D’Alberto completed the top three in the Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang.
Fourth was Jayden Ojeda in the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing Mustang from TRADIE Energy’s Lee Holdsworth and the Todd Hazelwood in the second Shell V-Power Racing Team entry.
Next was the Triple Eight Race Engineering Wildcard driver Zach Bates, Jamie Whincup in the lead Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro, while the Castrol Monster Racing Mustangs of Mark Winterbottom and James Moffat completed the top 10.
Nash Morris, Fabian Coulthard, Jordan Boys, Jarrod Hughes and Jack Perkins trailed outside the top 10.
As the build up continues towards Sunday’s Repco Bathurst 1000, the next practice session is an all-in at 10:05am AEST.
