Shane van Gisbergen ends Friday fastest

Reigning Repco Supercars Championship winner Shane van Gisbergen has ended the opening day on the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit on top in what was a rapidly drying track.

In an uninterrupted session, it was the Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro of van Gisbergen setting a 1m 10.667 to head Mobil 1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert in the lead Ford Mustang, 0.197s off the fastest time.

There were a few scraps with the wall as discovered their limits in Gen3’s first appearance at the tight street circuit of which Scott Pye and van Gisbergen were culprits.

Truck Assist Racing’s Jack Le Brocq was third ahead of first practice session pacesetter Pye and Monster Energy Racing’s Cam Waters.

Blanchard Racing Team’s new signing James Courtney was sixth in the Snowy River Racing, Tickford Racing-run Ford Mustang, with the R&J Batteries Camaro of Andre Heimgartner, Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus’ Will Brown, Nulon Racing’s James Golding and Thomas Randle for Castrol Racing rounded out the top 10.

Those to miss included Nick Percat in 11th ahead of championship leader Brodie Kostecki, Broc Feeney, Bryce Fullwood and Will Davison was 15th. Shell V-Power Racing Team teammate Anton De Pasquale was 18th.

Qualifying continues the Repco Supercars Championship action on the Gold Coast at 11:35pm AEST or 12:35pm AEDT tomorrow.
