Shane van Gisbergen tops qualifying ahead of Top 10 Shootout
A stunning lap from Repco Supercars Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen will ensure he will be the last to tackle this afternoon’s Top 10 Shootout after finishing qualifying on top of the timesheets.
Van Gisbergen set a 1m 10.404s to lead a Holden 1-2-3 on the streets of the Gold Coast as Mobil 1 Optus Racing’s Chaz Mostert was 0.391s behind, while Boost Mobile Racing by Erebus driver Brodie Kostecki followed with a time 0.456s off the pace.
Shell V-Power Racing Team’s Will Davison led the Ford charge, but was 0.493s off van Gisbergen’s pace as James Courtney in the Snowy River Racing Mustang was fifth ahead of the newly repaired Penrite Racing example of David Reynolds.
Others to make the Top 10 Shootout were R&J Batteries Brad Jones Racing driver Andre Heimgartner, Castrol Racing’s Thomas Randle and his Tickford Racing teammate Cameron Waters in the Monster Energy Mustang, while Anton De Pasquale rounds out the field.
The session was interrupted by two red flags as first Jake Kostecki hit the wall in the final sector and Todd Hazelwood also got stuck in a tyre wall.
To miss a Top 10 Shootout berth were Scott Pye in 11th, Nick Percat 12th, Mark Winterbottom 13th, James Golding 14th, Broc Feeney 15th, Will Brown 17th and Tim Slade 20th.
This afternoon’s opening race for the Repco Supercars Championship is at 3:45pm AEST (4:45pm AEDT).
