Steve Richards drives father Jim’s underdog HR-31

In the midst of Ford Sierra domination there was one marque taking it up to the Blue Oval and it was Holden.

The Fred Gibson-led Nissan Motorsport squad situated not far from the Japanese brand’s operations in Dandenong South was a plucky rival in its HR-31 GTS-R to the various Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500s filling the grid and helped Jim Richards secure the 1990 Australian Touring Car Championship.

It was underdog throughout its two and a half years of competition as the increase of development from the local Ford teams increased the stakes as many believed the Sierras down under were the fastest in the globe.

A Richards has stepped behind the wheel at the Taupo Historic GP in the form of Jim’s son and respected racer himself, Steven.

Providing a first look of the Repco Supercars Championship’s newest venue, watch as Steven wrestles the HR-31 GTS-R around the 3.321km layout.

Also, do yourself a favour and turn the volume up.
