Getting to 100 Australian Touring Car Championship race wins was unimaginable when it started back in 1960 as a single event, but more than 50-years later it was achieved by one of the greats.
Craig Lowndes achieved the feat in 2015 and cemented his legacy as one of the greatest drivers in Australian motorsport.
Lowndes took his 100th win at the Darwin Triple Crown in what was fittingly the 888th race in Australian Touring Car Championship history.
Entering the weekend Lowndes already held the record for most victories in history.
Making a near-perfect start to his career by taking 16 wins in 1996, Lowndes departed for Europe hopeful of a Formula 1 career, but returned home in 1998 and continued his domination.
Completing back-to-back titles in 1999 despite a knee injury suffered in a multiple rollover at Calder Park further complimented the aura surrounding Lowndes.
A move to Ford at the start of 2001 proved a shaky start despite still taking victories, but joining Triple Eight Race Engineering returned Lowndes to a consistent contender.
The team’s move to Holden and the rise of his teammate Jamie Whincup led to Lowndes not winning another championship, but he significantly added to his win tally.
Fast forward to 2015 and Lowndes was 41, but still winning as proven by his victory in the second race at Darwin.
Lowndes was at his best starting from sixth and emerging in the lead after the opening corner.
It was a clinical display from Lowndes in win 100 by leading throughout.
Lowndes went onto take 10 more wins to hold the record for most victories until teammate Jamie Whincup extended the tally to 125 before retiring in 2025.
The closest current driver to the record is Broc Feeney on 30, but he is sure to make in roads in the coming seasons.
