The Repco Garage previews the 12 Hour

For the first time Repco will be the naming rights partner of the Bathurst 12 Hour and it is set to be another cracking edition of Australia’s international GT race.

A competitive entry representing the globe’s most exotic manufacturers will feature in this weekend’s event headlined by BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-AMG.

The Repco Bathurst 12 Hour has been a long-time component of global GT racing promoter SRO’s Intercontinental GT Challenge of which Mercedes-AMG were victorious and driver Jules Gounon won the Drivers’ crown.

In fact, both Mercedes-AMG and Gounon took the flag in last year’s race marking the Frenchman’s third Repco Bathurst 12 Hour victory in a row after breaking Bentley’s Mountain curse in 2020. The last two for Gounon have been part of ex-pat Aussie Kenny Habul’s SunEnergy1 Racing team alongside fellow factory ace Luca Stolz.

Australia’s sole round in the Intercontinental GT Challenge is joined by some of the world’s prestigious events such as the Nurburgring 24 Hour, 24 Hours of Spa and Indianapolis 8 Hour, while in previous years manufacturers were required to nominate its entries at each event, this has now been abolished. Instead, only the best two placed representatives will count and the first 10 finishers collect drivers’ points.

To differentiate the IGTC entrants a white Fanatec windscreen banner will be on display.

The traditional trip to Bathurst also kicks off the Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS campaign featuring 30 events and 52 races where seven manufatcurers will do battle across the world primarily here in Australia, Asia, America and Europe.

Local entries include the likes of the debut of Wall Racing’s new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo to be shared by owner Adrian Deitz, Tony D’Alberto, Grant Denyer and David Wall, Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia will be in attendance with three R8 LMS GT3 Evo 2s, while EMA Manthey will represent Porsche.

Triple Eight Race Engineering lead the Mercedes-AMG charge alongside M Motorsport, while BMW’s gun Team WRT lead the Bavarian marque’s hopes.

Drivers include Craig Lowndes, Thomas Randle, Cam Waters, Jack Le Brocq, Will Brown, Broc Feeney, Valentino Rossi, Jayden Ojeda, Daniel Juncadella, Max Gotz, Maxime Martin, Raffaele Marciello, brothers Sheldon and Kelvin van der Linde, David Reynolds, Maro Engel, Jaxon Evans, Lee Holdsworth, Jamie Whincup, Matt Campbell and Laurens Vanthoor.

Invitational and GT4 classes add variety, while also providing star power too. Matt Stone Racing has entered an IRC GT for its main drivers Cam Hill and Nick Percat to gain mileage, while they will be up against CART legend Paul Tracy in a MARC II.

The French-built Vortex also adds an unknown to the Invitational Class.

Chaz Mostert’s new enterprise Method Motorsport will make its competitive debut at Bathurst featuring a host of young guns driving its two McLaren Artura GT4s.

Thursday’s traditional Track to Town will kick off the event ahead of the first practice sessions on February 16.
