Townsville Turns – Names for the Reid Park Street Circuit

It’s 14 years since Townsville’s Reid Park Street Circuit joined the Repco Supercars Championship, but none of the corners have names.

The Repco Garage has taken it upon itself to name some of the corners highlighting a few of the memorable moments at the venue.

Pit Lane (0) – Percat’s Pit Fire

Back in 2019 Nick Percat endured a disastrous pit stop and one all teams fear. It led to Percat briefly leaving a fiery trail down pit lane, but fellow teams ensured it remained only for a short time.

Turn 2 – The Carpark

Always a place where drama is expected, a tight turn right at the start of the lap always creates chaos. Pick a year and generally a spin has occurred leading to a traffic jam with damage galore.

Turn 3 – Perkins Flame

Three years ago Matt McLean took team orders to a new level when he came to the aid of Eggleston Motorsport stablemate Jack Perkins after a pile up led to a fire. McLean was on the fire extinguisher limiting the damage.

Turn 4 – CL Spell

Craig Lowndes has had some spills and Townsville is no exception. The fast chicane is one of the more challenging sections on this hybrid street circuit.

Turn 6 – Whincup Wobbles

Not often did ‘The GOAT’ Jamie Whincup make a mistake, but on this occasion a slippery kerb was his downfall at this location.

Turns 8,9 – SVG’s Burnpatch

Fans in Australia have witnessed this on many occasions and now the US get to experience it, but Shane van Gisbergen always took advantage of Townsville’s open spaces when victory came.

Turn 10 – Quinn’s Leg

A big hit at this sweeper for Tony Quinn in 2022 provides the name for this corner. This incident kept him out of racing for a bit, but Quinn has since returned to the track racing.

Turn 11 – McConked

Practice in 2010 hosted a hairy incident for Cameron McConville in the Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Commodore when he arrived at Turn 10 with no brakes, but this corner has witnessed plenty of action and there are many candidates here.

Turn 12 – Richie’s Skid Pan

A frustrated Richie Stanaway decided to display the drifting prowess of his Tickford Racing Ford FGX Falcon in what was his maiden season in 2018.

Turn 13 – ADP’s Bomb

Named after Anton De Pasquale late dive-bomb on Shane van Gisbergen in 2022 after the duo battled during the closing stages.
