Ford Performance Vehicles proved a worthy competitor to Holden Special Vehicles for more than a decade, but it offered something a little different compared to its rival in the form of a turbo powered F6 Typhoon.
Having introduced the Falcon XR6 Turbo as part of the BA line-up, FPV took it to another level with the F6 Typhoon.
Producing 270kW of power and producing 450 to 550Nm, so the F6 Typhoon didn’t have quite the power of the range topping GT, but had more torque.
Featuring a Garrett T40 turbo from the XR6 equivalent though with raised boost to 0.64 courtesy of a larger 12-core intercooler and dual-entry airbox to improve induction efficiency.
Heavy duty rods sourced from the Falcon LPG variant were fitted so too heavy duty valve springs, with an oil cooler needed when the going gets tough.
AP Racing supplied the 240mm twin-plate clutch to handle the extra torque mated to the Tremec six-speed gearbox and a shorter 3.73 diff compared to the XR6 Turbo.
Brakes were amped up to twin grooved ventilated front rotors and solid 303mm rears, twin-piston calibers and single rears, but a Brembo brake package was an option.
A low key appearance made the FPV a stealth compared to the more garish look of the HSV range.
Of course, the Typhoon proved a popular model and was used built into a factory drift weapon, while also competing in production car racing.
It spawned into the F6 come the FG generation and hit the 310kW mark before FPV ended in 2014.
