What is Ruapuna?

The Repco Supercars Championship is building up to a debut of a new circuit on the calendar and in doing so will complete the first New Zealand doubleheader.

Situated on the South Island just 13km from Christchurch, Ruapuna holds a long history since it was built in 1963 and has hosted all of New Zealand’s leading categories.

The circuit is owned and operated by the Canterbury Car Club Inc, with the facility featuring a drag strip, speedway oval, radio control track, plus hosts a racing school.

When it was built in 1963, the layout was very simple as it featured a tri-oval and a long straight ending in a tight hairpin bend.

Major improvements were completed in 1993 when the circuit was completely changed to a 3.330km length, but the circuit can be used in up to seven configurations.

Supercars will use the Grand Prix layout at Ruapana at 3.33km and can be experienced in the Project Cars game.

Few current Supercars drivers have experience at the track making the event on April 17-19 an exciting proposition.
